Texas Instruments 54ACT16861, 74ACT16861 20-Bit Bus Transceivers with 3-State Outputs
Summary
These noninverting 20-bit bus transceivers are designed for high-speed, asynchronous data communication across multiple buses. The device can operate either as a single unit or partition into two independent 10-bit sections, ensuring reliable signal transfer with optimized flow architecture. This manual provides comprehensive technical documentation, including electrical operating ranges, functional tables, and detailed logic diagrams for system implementation. Ideal for digital circuit designers and engineers requiring robust, high-performance transceivers, especially in applications demanding military temperature range reliability (54ACT16861).

The ’ACT16861 are noninverting 20-bit 2B4 2A4 transceivers designed for asynchronous 2B5 2A5 communication between data buses. The 2B6 2A6 control-function implementation minimizes VCC VCC external timing requirements. 2B7 2A7
The ’ACT16861 can be used as two 10-bit
GND GND
transceivers or one 20-bit transceiver. They allow
data transmission from the A bus to the B bus or
from the B bus to the A bus, depending upon the
logic level at the output-enable (OEAB or OEBA) 2OEAB 2OEBA
inputs. The output-enable inputs can be used to disable the device so that the buses are effectively isolated. The 74ACT16861 is packaged in TI’s shrink small-outline package, which provides twice the I/O pin count and functionality of standard small-outline packages in the same printed-circuit-board area. The 54ACT16861 is characterized for operation over the full military temperature range of –55°C to 125°C. The 74ACT16861 is characterized for operation from –40°C to 85°C.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of applications are the ACT16861 transceivers suitable for?
They are designed for asynchronous communication between data buses.
How can the device operate regarding bus direction and size?
It can function as two 10-bit transceivers or one 20-bit transceiver, transmitting data A to B, or B to A.
What is the specified operating temperature range for both package versions?
The 54ACT16861 works in –55°C to 125°C (full military range), while the 74ACT16861 operates from –40°C to 85°C.
How can external noise or bus activity be minimized?
The output-enable inputs (OEAB or OEBA) can be used to disable the device, effectively isolating the buses and minimizing switching noise.
