National Semiconductor 54F 74F161A, 54F 74F163A Data Sheet
Summary
These high-speed synchronous binary counters are designed for robust digital circuit implementation, functioning as modulo-16 counters with flexible reset capabilities. Ideal for building programmable dividers and complex multi-stage counter systems, these ICs offer reliable counting performance up to 120 MHz. This documentation provides comprehensive technical details, including electrical specifications, pin assignments, functional operation modes (including master/synchronous resets), and available packaging options for electronics engineers developing critical digital logic systems.

54F/74F161A 54F/74F163A Synchronous Presettable Binary Counter General Description Features
The ’F161A and ’F163A are high-speed synchronous modu- Synchronous counting and loading
lo-16 binary counters. They are synchronously presettable High-speed synchronous expansion for application in programmable dividers and have two types Typical count frequency of MHz of Count Enable inputs plus Terminal Count output for Guaranteed 4000V minimum ESD protection versatility in forming synchronous multi-stage counters. The ’F161A has an asynchronous Master-Reset input that over- rides all other inputs and forces the outputs LOW. The ’F163A has Synchronous Reset input that overrides counting and parallel loading and allows the outputs to be simultaneously reset on the rising edge of the clock. The ’F161A and ’F163A are high-speed versions of the ’F161 and ’F163.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum counting frequency of these modules?
They have a typical count frequency of 120 MHz at Count Enable inputs.
How do I reset the 'F161A versus the 'F163A?
The 'F161A uses an asynchronous Master-Reset input, while the 'F163A uses a synchronous Reset input.
What happens to counting if either CEP or CET is LOW?
If either Count Enable Parallel (CEP) or Count Enable Trickle (CET) is low, it inhibits counting.
Are these components suitable for critical life support devices?
The manual cautions that they are considered critical components in life support devices and require specific approval.
