Texas Instruments TSB41BA3B Errata

Summary

This essential technical guide addresses common connectivity failures within 1394 Beta systems, particularly those experiencing bus resets due to signal timing discrepancies on complex cable setups. It details the root cause of "disappearing IDLE" signals and mandates a definitive workaround. System architects, hardware engineers, and integrators working with multi-hop FireWire networks must consult this documentation to correctly implement a 1394A PHY device for stable data transmission and robust system performance.

TSB41BA3B Errata

Disappearing IDLE in Beta system Issue

1.1 Description

Disappearing IDLE in Beta system results in max arbitration state timeout and bus reset. Specifically in

Beta systems with more than four cable hops, unwanted bus resets may occur.

1.2 Cause

short IDLE between data packet and an arbitration grant disappears.

As signals propagate across the network, the IDLE between data packet and an arbitration grant

shortens since the time needed to repeat data packet is longer than the time needed to repeat grant.

1.3 Workaround

Add 1394A PHY to the system to force legacy gap timing on the bus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why might unwanted bus resets occur in Beta systems?

Unwanted bus resets may occur, especially when dealing with more than four cable hops, due to a disappearing IDLE signal.

What causes the 'Disappearing IDLE' error on the 1394 network?

A short cannot happen between a data packet and an arbitration grant as signals propagate across the 1394 network.

How can I prevent the 'Disappearing IDLE' bus reset issue?

You must add a 1394A PHY to the system to force legacy gap timing on the 1394 bus.
