MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS DS1803 Addressable Dual Digital Potentiometer

Summary

This addressable dual digital potentiometer provides two independently adjustable 256-position potentiometers controlled via a simple 2-wire serial interface. Ideal for applications requiring precise, non-volatile analog voltage adjustment without complex wiring. The manual details full device operation, communication protocols (SDA/SCL), and addressing schemes, making it essential for electronics engineers designing compact, programmable circuitry using standard resistors (10kΩ, 50kΩ, or 100kΩ).

DESCRIPTION The DS1803 addressable dual digital potentiometer features two independently controlled 256-position potentiometers. Device control is achieved through a 2-wire serial interface. Three address pins allow up to 8 DS1803’s to share the same 2-wire interface. The exact wiper position of each potentiometer can be written or read. The DS1803 is available in a 16-pin DIP, 16-pin SO, and 14-pin TSSOP package. The device is available in three standard resistance values: 10kΩ, 50kΩ, and 100kΩ and is specified over the industrial temperature range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many DS1803 devices can share a single 2-wire interface?

Up to 8 DS1803’s can share the same 2-wire interface using the three dedicated address pins (A0, A1, and A2).

What is the initial wiper position when the device powers up?

Since it is a volatile device, upon power-up, the DS1803 wipers’ position will automatically be set to position 00h, corresponding to the low-end terminals.

What voltage and temperature range must the user consider for operation?

The device supports operation using 3V or 5V power supplies over an industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.

Which pins are responsible for serial data transfer, and what role does the master play?

Data is transferred using the SDA (Serial Data I/O) and SCL (Serial Clock Input) pins. The master device controls the message by generating the serial clock and controlling bus access.
