Fairchild LCX Family Introduction Data Handbook
Summary
The LCX family provides a high-performance, versatile logic solution—including gates, MSI, and octal/16-bit functions—specifically optimized for on-board buffering in complex electronic designs. This manual details a mixed voltage compatible system that supports inputs and outputs ranging from 2.5V up to 5V, featuring robust overvoltage tolerance. Key benefits include exceptional power efficiency, low noise, high-speed performance, and balanced ±24 mA output drive. It is ideal for engineers designing circuits that require reliable buffering and stable operation across extended voltage ranges (2.0V–3.6V).

LCX Family Introduction
LCX is optimized for on-board buffering applications and offers mixed 2.5V/3.3V–5V capability by providing 5V over voltage tolerance on both the inputs and outputs. This family of popular gates, MSI, octal and 16-bit functions has maximum propa- gation delays similar to FAST and FACT. LCX also offers low CMOS power, low noise, and balanced output high-drive (±24 m A).
Features Benefits
5V tolerant inputs and outputs. Interfaces to 5V and/or 3V devices. High speed (6.5 ns max delay for LCX244, High speed for on-board buffering applications. 4.5 ns max. delay for LCX16244). Very low static and dynamic power. Saves power, extends battery life. Low noise. Low ground bounce, overshoot, undershoot, and EMI.
Extended 2.0V–3.6V VCC supply voltage operation. Provides lower voltage operation without moving to a new family.
(Guaranteed AC and DC Specifications from 2.3 - 3.6V). Balanced ±24 m A output drive. Drives transmission lines down to 50Ω. Power up/down high impedance inputs and outputs. Facilitates power management and live insertion. Gates, MSI, octal and 16-bit functions. Broad portfolio and wide bit widths for on-board buffering
applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does LCX support for power tolerance mean?
LCX provides 5V over voltage tolerance on both the inputs and outputs, allowing it to interface with devices running at 5V and/or 3V.
How fast is the LCX family in buffering applications?
The maximum propagation delay is comparable to FAST™ and FACT™, but specific parts like LCX244 boast a high speed of 6.5 ns max delay.
What low-voltage operating feature does LCX offer?
It provides lower voltage operation via guaranteed AC and DC specifications (CC) from 2.3 - 3.6V, without needing to switch to a completely new family.
Can the LCX package drive high-impedance lines?
Yes, it has power up/down high impedance inputs and outputs, which facilitates effective power management and live insertion.
