Quality assurance and reliability “Quality is foremost in ROHM. No matter what the chal- lenge, we will strive to continue to supply a large number of products of excellent quality to customers at home and overseas and further pursue the betterment of the world we live in.” This is our purpose at ROHM. Thermal printheads are used more widely. They must have high performance and high reliability. Reliability of thermal printheads depends on the elimination of initial failures and chance failures. Reducing these failure rates corresponds to high reliability. Initial failures are usually caused by problems in the pro- duction process, and they reduce as time passes. It is too late to wait for initial failures and then fix them after the product is on the market and complaints have arisen. Consequently, quality control and process control are vi- tal during the production process for the prevention of ini- tial failures. Chance failures are caused by design quality of a prod- uct. An adequate margin in performance of parts in de- sign, such as derating and redundancy given in the de- sign, can reduce the failure rate of chance failures.
