Statement of Volatility – Dell Precision 3540 CAUTION: A CAUTION indicates either potential damage to hardware or loss of data and tells you how to avoid the problem. The Dell Precision 3540 contains both volatile and non-volatile (NV) components. Volatile components lose their data immediately after power is removed from the component. Non-volatile (NV) components continue to retain their data even after power is removed from the component. The following NV components are present on the Precision 3540 system board. Table 1. Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing the main power cord destroy user data?

Yes, primary power loss destroys all user data on volatile memory components like LPDDR3.

How does the S4 'hibernate' state differ from S5 'soft off'?

S4 saves the system context to a file on non-volatile storage, while S5 clears all registers and requires a complete boot.

What components retain data when the system is off?

Non-volatile components such as the SSD drive, BIOS/EC, Thunderbolt EEPROM, CMOS, and TPM retain data after power removal.

Does the Precision 3540 support the S3 standby state?

No, the Precision 3540 supports S0, Modern standby, S4, and S5, but does not support S3.
